Developing and Writing Funding Applications
Recorded on 28 November 2024
Winning external research funding is increasingly seen as an important element of a successful academic CV. Yet the process can be extremely time-consuming and the percentage of applications that are successful is relatively low for many of the major schemes. This session seeks to help Humanities scholars think through some of the main questions associated with the application process.
These include:
- Why apply for a major grant (is the research not possible without it)?
- Which funder/scheme best suits my needs?
- What are the essential characteristics of a successful bid?
- What aspects of the research will I be expected to explain?
- Who should I consult and include in the bid-writing process?
- What will the external reviewers be looking for in a bid?
- What happens when I’ve submitted the bid?
- How should I respond to reviewer comments?
Speakers included:
- Professor Philip Murphy (Director of History & Policy, IHR)
- Dr Eve Hayes De Kalaf (Training Fellow in History & the Humanities, IHR)
- Dr Joseph Ford (Senior Lecturer in French Studies, ILCS)
- Dr Andrew Fairweather-Tall (Director of Research and Innovation, UoL)
