Speaker: Richard Dennis (UCL)

Drawing principally on letters, news items and editorials in the London press, and on reports of crimes and accidents in Old Bailey Proceedings, I explore how horse-buses changed the perception, experience and use of metropolitan space for passengers and pedestrians between 1829 and the 1850s. I also consider how the space of the bus was experienced and practised by different classes and genders.
