The Victoria County History of Essex

Twelve volumes have been published to date covering parts of the county now within the bounds of Greater London to Colchester and the seaside resorts of Walton on the Naze, Frinton and Clacton in the far north east of Essex.

In March 2025, the latest Essex 'Short', Southend: Victorian Town and Resort was published.

Work is currently concentrated on the port of Harwich.

Parts of 'Metropolitan Essex' was included within London from the late 19th century, and expanded further in 1965. Future work on these areas, included within the boroughs of Greater London, will be undertaken by our VCH London project.
