The Victoria County History of Essex

Eleven volumes have been published to date covering parts of the county now within the bounds of Greater London to Colchester and the seaside resorts of Walton on the Naze, Frinton and Clacton in the far north east of Essex.

Work is currently concentrated on the coastal area near St Osyth and the parishes to its east, Great and Little Clacton, Great and Little Holland and Frinton. These will be published as Volume XII, Part 1. The second part of this volume will describe the parishes collectively called the Sokens, Kirby-le-Soken, Thorpe-le-Soken, and Walton-le-Soken. Read drafts of some sections of Part 2.

The county editor, Dr Christopher Thornton, can be contacted by email or by post: VCH Essex, C/O Essex Record Office, Wharf Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6YT.

Eight volumes are available on British History Online. For full access to all volumes, check your local library catalogue or your local archive.
