The Victoria County History of Herefordshire
Volume I was published in 1908, and described the Natural History, pre-medieval Archaeology, the Agriculture and Political History of the county together with its Domesday Book entry.
The Herefordshire VCH Trust was formed in 1998 to revive the project in the county and was successful in including Herefordshire in the Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘England’s Past for Everyone’ project. The four year project was led by Dr Sylvia Pinches, and produced two paperback volumes on the town of Ledbury, Ledbury: A Market Town and its Tudor Heritage and Ledbury: Parish and People Before the Reformation.
Subsequently, VCH Shorts have been published for Eastnor and Bosbury. A third, Colwall, was published in 2020. Research is underway on Cradley with another short expected to be produced in 2021. Research will then move onto the remaining parishes of Mathon, Coddington, Donnington as well as updating and extending the texts produced for the England's Past for Everyone paperbacks for Ledbury into a full VCH account. These eight parishes will then in the next few years form the first Herefordshire VCH Red Book.
