The Victoria County History of Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire was completed in four volumes between 1902 and 1914 with an index published in 1923.

Volume I included Natural History, Prehistory, Anglo-Saxon archaeology, the Domesday Book, and Sport. Volume II included accounts of Political History and Education in the county as well as topographical accounts of two of Hertfordshire's Hundreds. The remaining Hundreds were included in Volumes III and IV.

The extent of development in the county - notably the development of the Garden Cities at Letchworth and Welwyn and the new towns of Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield mean that work is needed to update these volumes.

Part of Volume II and all of Volumes III and IV are on British History Online. For full access to all volumes, check your local library catalogue or your local archive.
