VCH Surrey and London
VCH London is an exciting evolution of the longstanding VCH project, which will now encompass the entirety of the capital. Led by Francis Boorman, the plan is to establish a VCH Trust to support and promote research into the history of contemporary London’s 32 boroughs. These boroughs take in all of the historic county of Middlesex, and the metropolitan parts of the counties of Essex, Surrey and Kent, whose boundaries will continue to be recognised and differences celebrated, while embracing new approaches and re-examining the VCH canon.
We have already published 13 volumes on London and Middlesex, and others on the parts of Greater London formerly in Essex and Surrey.
The Victoria County History of Surrey
The county was completed in four volumes between 1902 and 1912 followed by an index volume produced in 1914. The amount of development that has taken place in the county in the intervening century means that there is significant scope to update this work.
Part of Volume II, detailing the county's medieval religious houses, and of Volumes II and IV are on British History Online. For full access to all volumes, check your local library catalogue or your local archive.
