About the Events Series
The Centre for the History of People, Place and Community events series builds on IHR strengths in both local history and urban and metropolitan history, bringing together academics, place-based researchers beyond the academy, heritage professionals, creative practitioners and others to present work and forge new approaches to making histories of place and people. It seeks to bridge disciplinary boundaries and foster comparative, connected conversations, and to identify opportunities to make both theoretical and practice-led interventions in contemporary debates about place and community.
The 2024-25 events series is specifically focused on the relationships between place-based histories and knowledge exchange and many of its events are co-hosted in collaboration with other academic, heritage, local history, and community-led organisations.

Attending Events
Who are the sessions for?
The People, Place and Community Events Series is open to anyone interested in place-based histories. It aims to create a welcoming environment, by promoting a positive sense of community and a friendly space for academic freedom and new ideas.
Everyone participating in and attending events in this series is kindly asked to make themselves familiar with the IHR’s code of conduct.
Format and Schedule
- Many of the events in this series are held online only. Occasionally we will host hybrid events, held both in person and on Zoom, or in-person only events if the format of the event requires.
- Most events in the series start at 5:30 pm and finish at 7.00 pm. However, please check the information for each specific event as some are held at different times.
- The format of each event will be slightly different. Please see individual event abstracts for information about their format.
Asking and Answering Questions
- Online attendees are encouraged to write questions in the Zoom chat or use the raised hand function on zoom to indicate that they would like to directly ask their question.
- During hybrid sessions, questions asked in the room may need to be repeated to ensure those online can hear.
- Please keep your questions short and to the point; and be patient if there is a long queue.
Value
We value and encourage all points of view and hope that questions will be asked with the kind of respect and generosity that promotes dialogue. In the highly unlikely event that attendees behave in a way that is disruptive, offensive or inappropriately aggressive we will take appropriate steps to preserve a spirit of professional academic debate and discussion.
