Course Details

Chaired by Claire Langhamer, the panel will feature Sara Charles, editor of the IHR's journal Historical Research, and Vanessa Rockel, managing editor of Reviews in History.

The session seeks to demystify peer review in all of its different manifestations but will focus particularly on academic articles and book reviews. We will discuss how journals select reviewers for your submissions, how you might respond to critical reviewer reports, and how to avoid being 'reviewer 2' when you comment on other people's work. We will also explore the culture of book reviews: what are they for, what does a successful review look like, and why should you do them? Vanessa will also explain why Reviews in History includes a reviewer response. We will, of course, leave plenty of time for you to raise questions and discuss your own experiences
